Karla Black
Posted by Maya Davies, 02 June 2011
Recently there has been a wave of exhibitions and press for all-female line-ups of artists and sculptors. Featured amongst them is Karla Black, a name you’ll start hearing a lot more. She’s tipped to win the 2011 Turner Prize, and is representing Scotland at the Venice Biennale. Her sculptures, often made from everyday materials, are part manipulated form, part painting floating in space, and part performance. Swathes of colour, texture, and sometimes scent lend her work an immediate presence; forcing us to regard familiar materials/substances, such as cellophane, cream and toothpaste, in a new context when combined with a more traditional art palette.
